Outerwear Care Instructions

How do I wash my outerwear?

We recommend never washing your Northwest Tech gear in a washing machine. However, keeping your gear clean is definitely important, so we suggest hand washing your gear with a mild powder detergent (not liquid). Using liquid detergents can leave a residue on your jacket that can interfere with the DWR finish on the face fabric.

We also suggest washing your gear in a specialized product such as Nixwax tech wash or Arsko’s Sport Wash.

If you feel it is essential to put your gear through the wash, be sure to secure all velcro and zip all zippers before washing. Use a mild powder detergent or a tech wash like mentioned above. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle.

How do I dry my Northwest Tech outerwear after washing?

DO NOT DRY YOUR GEAR IN THE DRYER. The high height of dryers can damage the membrane within the fabric. Both washer and dryer use causes fabrics to break down quicker.

We recommend hang drying your outerwear. Mild heat such as a fireplace or space heater is acceptable. Northwest Tech gear typically dries out very quickly.

My outerwear will not stay dry anymore, what can I do about it?

Both our snow and bike fabrics are treated with a Durable Water Repellent finish (DWR). This finish helps the shell of the fabric resist moisture by causing water to bead–up so that it easily falls off rather than being absorbed into the fabric. As your gear is worn and used overtime, the collection of soils (both external and from your body) can decrease the performance of this DWR finish.

In order to optimize the performance of your DWR finish, wash your gear with a mild powder detergent or with a waterproofing care product (see above). For extreme performance junkies, you can treat your products with a personal coating of DWR spray.
